Elizabeth Ochanya The Tragic Story Of An 8 Years Old Nigerian Girl


This is the tragic story of Elizabeth Ochanya who was raped by her uncle and his son for 5 years.

You would imagine that an 8 years old child would be playing with her dolls and having tea parties. Elizabeth got none of that because her Mother died when she was 5 years old.  She had to live with her mum’s cousin her aunt. Elizabeth had no idea of what was about to happen to her.

                  What Happened When Elizabeth Ochanya While She Was Living With Her Aunt

Elizabeth was 8 years old when she was raped and sodomized by her aunt son and husband Andrew Ogbuja who was a lecturer in Benue State Polytechnic.  Elizabeth was reportedly drugged by her aunt son and husband, she was told that they would harm her if she told anyone what they were doing to her. So in fear, she became silent. these went on for a couple of years before she died.

         How Did Elizabeth Ochanya Die

Due to rape, Elizabeth became ill and later died of Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) and other health complications at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.

                             Reaction To The Death Of Elizabeth Ochanya

The Benue state government were quick to name a street after Elizabeth Ochanya.  Numerous  Nigerian women mourned bitterly for Elizabeth. These touched the heart of the  Mrs. Julie Okah  who is the director of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficked in Persons, (NAPTIP), encouraged other girls going through the same ordeal to come out and speak to the authorities so that they can respond swiftly. Many human right groups have protested and asked the Nigerian government to persecute Mr. Andrew Ogbuja and his son who are responsible for this unthinkable crime. But they fear justice might not prevail due to Nigeria’s history of corruption in the judiciary system.

                             Elizabeth Ochanya Court Case So Far

Mr. Andrew is currently in police custody while his son is nowhere to be found. The case is still in court and we will be updating you on the latest development.
